Cleansers are used to clean the skin by removing sweat, makeup, oil, and dirt. Besides cleaning, cleansers also help unclog pores and exfoliate dead skin cells. Many cleansers also contain moisturiser to hydrate and protect the skin. If you have sensitive skin, the best cleanser for eczema should be fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic (won’t block pores). Make sure that your cleanser is also suitable for the face, as hand or body cleansers may be too harsh.

What to look for in a cleanser for eczema

The best cleansers for eczema are ones that can remove dirt without affecting the integrity of your skin barrier. This allows your skin to heal and become more resistant to external allergens. Here are some ingredients you should be aware of when looking for a suitable eczema cleanser:

Sulfate-free surfactants. A surfactant is what makes a cleanser effective at removing dirt and oils. However, sulfate-based surfactants can make the skin dry and irritated.

Fragrance-free. To create different scents and smells in cleansers, manufacturers may add a cocktail of fragrances which can make eczema worse. Instead, choose fragrance-free cleansers for eczema, or ones that only use essential oils.

Paraben-free. To extend its shelf-life, some cleansers use preservatives like parabens, benzyl alcohol and methylisothiazolinone, which can cause a reaction in many eczema sufferers.

Our products have been selected to avoid many of these ingredients. However, everybody's skin is unique. You may be sensitive to fragrances, but fine with parabens, for example. By understanding your unique triggers, you can find the right product that works for you.
