What Is TSW Skin?
TSW stands for topical steroid withdrawal. It happens when someone who has used steroid creams for a prolonged period decides to stop, and their skin reacts with symptoms that are often more intense than the original eczema.
If you are noticing something on your body (or a loved one’s) that doesn’t look or feel like a typical eczema flare-up, you’re right to question whether it might be TSW skin, as it presents itself differently.
The most recognisable TSW skin symptoms include:
- Burning or stinging sensation that doesn’t ease with moisturiser — many people describe it as feeling like a constant sunburn
- Redness spreading beyond the original eczema site — this is a key difference from regular flares, which tend to stay localised
- Oozing or weeping skin, sometimes with crusting as the skin tries to heal
- Extreme sensitivity to water, air, and temperature changes — even room-temperature water can feel uncomfortable on TSW skin
One of the most common questions we receive is: how do I know if it’s TSW or just my eczema getting worse? The biggest tell is the spread. Eczema flares tend to appear in familiar spots, such as the crooks of your elbows, behind your knees, on your hands. TSW, on the other hand, often spreads to areas where you never had eczema before, and the skin may feel thin, papery, or “elephant-like” in texture.
How long does TSW last? It varies widely. For some, the worst of it passes within weeks. For others, particularly those who used potent steroids for year, it can take months or even longer, and might come and go in waves. There’s no single timeline, and that uncertainty is one of the hardest parts of the process.
If you’re going through this, know that you’re not alone. We’ve spoken with and supported many people in Singapore who have walked this path. For practical tips on how to manage TSW symptoms, we’ve put together a detailed guide covering each stage of withdrawal from the burning phase through to the flaking and healing stages.
From Sleepless Nights to Healing Skin: Darren’s Story
Darren went through exactly this. Here’s what his TSW journey looked like, and what eventually helped his skin heal. His story is one of resilience, determination, and finding hope through patience and the right tools.
As a young sales executive, Darren juggles a demanding office job with the daily struggle of eczema. His eczema had been affecting his fingers, palms, face, and legs for years. Like many others, he relied on steroid creams to manage the itch and flare-ups, pairing them with moisturisers for temporary relief.
But in mid-2024, Darren decided to stop using steroids altogether after realising they weren’t the solution he needed. This decision led him down the challenging path of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)—a phase marked by relentless full-body itching, sleepless nights, and raw, wounded skin every morning.
“The most recent flare-up started in July as a dry patch on the left side of my face. It became red, inflamed, and oozing, and eventually spread to the rest of my body. That’s when I realized I needed a better approach because steroids weren’t a long-term solution.”
During his lowest points, Darren shared how the nights were unbearable. The endless scratching left his skin raw, and mornings would begin with pain, exhaustion, and dread of repeating the cycle. He described feeling trapped, as though relief was always just out of reach.
What Darren Changed
That’s when Darren decided to try something different. With guidance from Skinshare, and renewed determination, he committed to a healing routine built around wound care and skin protection:
Step 1 — Wound care: He started by treating his broken skin with Argasol Silver Gel, an antimicrobial gel that helped clean and soothe the open areas without stinging. This reduced the risk of infection and gave his skin a chance to start repairing.
“The Argasol Silver Gel has been a relief. After I shower, my skin feels extremely dry, but the gel reduces oozing, brings comfort, and stops infections. It’s the first step in my routine and something I can’t go without.”
Step 2 — Deep moisturising: He followed the silver gel with regular applications of 100% Pure Emu Oil, which penetrates deeply without irritating sensitive TSW skin. Emu oil’s natural anti-inflammatory properties made it a good fit for the burning and redness Darren was experiencing.
Step 3 — Overnight skin protection: To protect his skin barrier while he slept, Darren started wearing DermaSilk Tubular Sleeves. These antimicrobial silk sleeves kept his treatments in place and reduced friction against bedsheets.
Step 4 — Preventing sleep scratching: He also wore Cardigan Arm Sleeves with Reversible Mittens to stop himself from unconsciously scratching overnight — something regular gloves couldn’t do because he’d pull them off in his sleep.
“The cardigan sleeves with reversible mittens have been a lifesaver. They prevent me from scratching, which regular gloves couldn’t do. I also use tubular sleeves on my legs, and these have helped improve my skin significantly in just a few weeks.”
Darren’s Results
The results weren’t immediate, but Darren persisted. After just one week, the inflammation on his hands started to subside. By two weeks, his skin began healing, and the rawness gave way to smoother, drier patches—a sign of progress. By the end of a month, Darren’s legs, arms, and hands looked drastically different. The wounds were gone, the redness had faded, and the itch was far more manageable.

For Darren, this was more than just about his skin; it was about reclaiming his life. He shared how he could finally sleep soundly without waking up to painful skin. Even simple things, like wearing his office attire without discomfort, brought a newfound sense of normalcy and joy.
Looking back, Darren acknowledges that it wasn’t one single product that made the difference but the combination of them working together—showing the importance of having a full skincare regimen for eczema and TSW. His journey reminds us that eczema management isn’t about quick fixes but consistent, compassionate care for your skin.
Today, Darren says he feels hopeful again, something he thought was impossible during his TSW journey. His message to others is simple: “Don’t give up. Healing takes time, but it’s worth it when you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
